When you buy fencing, you want to ensure that you’re making a choice that will stand the test of time. You’re investing a significant amount of money, and you want to ensure that your investment is well informed. While it might seem like the best place for your money would be in metal fencing, the truth is that cedar split rail fence might be the better option. How long does cedar last?
Built-in Natural Pest Defense
First, cedar split rail fence is naturally resistant to pests, fungus and other forces of decay. In fact, posts driven into the ground can last 15 years or more without any sort of protection. Rails above ground can last even longer than that. So, you can count on your cedar split rail fence lasting at least 15 years, if not longer. Some species can last up to 30 years. Few other materials on the market can measure up to that.
It is very environmentally friendly
With that being said, cedar is also environmentally friendly. It’s a natural product that will ultimately break down and return to the earth, and its durability is completely natural, not due to chemical treatments. That means you don’t have to worry about chemicals leeching out of the wood into the surrounding soil – the wood’s own natural tannins, resins and oils will keep it looking great for years to come.

Of course, there are a few caveats here. You should make sure you’re working with the right fence supply company, for one. Some unscrupulous companies may try to pass off spruce fencing as cedar split rail fencing – spruce usually only lasts about seven years. Some companies also don’t really split their cedar. Instead, they saw it look as though it were split. Naturally, split cedar has a more appealing look to it. The right company will provide you with authentic split cedar rail fencing that will stand the test of time.
