wind damaged fence

Homeowners insurance will cover damage to your fence. It may also not do so, and this is something you need to know. There is not any point contacting your insurance company only for them to say: ‘sorry bud, your Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover the fence.’

How do you know? The simple way to find out is to ask the insurance company. You may find that there are limits or circumstances to what the policy covers with regards to your fence. At Fence Supply Online we often hear the question, and usually it comes after the fact. Sometimes clients are in the clear, they have the cover, and all is good with the world. We see many clients on the wrong side of an insurance policy, though, and it is not pretty.

We had a look around the rules and regulations of Homeowners insurance and damage to a fence. To make the situation clear to our clients we put our investigations into a post

Knowing about Homeowners insurance and damage to your fence includes:

  • Make sure the cover is in the policy
  • What happens when a tree hits the fence?
  • Is storm damage in the Homeowners Insurance?
  • How about vandalism?

Let’s take a closer look at each point.

Make sure the cover is in the policy

There is not any point in finding out you don’t have cover after the storm.

Usually the Homeowners Insurance will cover the fence in the yard. You will find it under the ‘other structures’ section of the policy document. If there is not one, then ask the insurance company. It is also a good idea to check in the section what ‘other structures’ actually means.

If you find an insurance premium costs less than other companies, then check the small print for the differences.

What happens when a tree hits the fence?

We find that a tree falling and hitting your fence is a common source of insurance claims. The tree falling usually does severe damage, and maybe taking precautions is a good idea.

If the tree is on your property, then your insurance coverage should be a straight forward matter of putting a call to the company. Most policies will cover the clearing of the tree and damaged fence, as well as the replacement.

If the tree is healthy, you will be okay; if not, then they may say it is your fault.

Is storm damage in the Homeowners insurance?

Usually the answer is yes to this question.

Storms can do a lot of damage to your fence and most Homeowners insurance policies do cover storm damage, but to a limited liability. If your tree comes down in a storm because it was unhealthy, you may not be covered. Check this part of your policy carefully.

High winds and even tornados do damage. Make sure you are insured.

How about vandalism?

Damage to your fence from the local gangs will be covered under your Homeowners insurance.

It is a good idea to take photos as soon as you can of the broken or paint covered fence. You should also call the local police station and file a complaint. When you follow the proper procedure, you will be okay with the insurance company.

Check that the cost of repairs is more than the insurance deductible, just in case.
